Confidence is not essential to manufacturing, building, and experimentation.
What you need is repeatability. To be able to become a 10,000 hour expert in a field doesn't mean you'll be confident enough to be the best.
Holding firmly to strong ideas will through you deep under the waters of confusion.
You will spin about on your arse not knowing which way is up.
All these paradoxes have long existed. You might think wikipedia is great, wait until you see how much it changes. History is amiss story. No one know's how things are going to evolve.
Try not to get angry at your children for their actions and choices. You don't know the circumstances their opportunities have given them. If you're going to be a strict parent, you should first be strict on yourself and then teach them why it is you are so strict on yourself in such a way that they are willing to believe it is a valuable enough proposition than the alternative.
That is true confidence.
